What if I only want to have my shoulders and Neck focused on
I wanted to share with you some insights that may help address your concern that I was not spending enough time on your neck and shoulders. I was trained and have often found through working on several people whose main concern was the tension in their upper body, to also address their hamstrings and back, as that supports the release of tension while it travels upward and out. When the tension in one area of the body leaves, the release has to go somewhere. Tension dissipates at the specific sight of palpation and if it is a deeper release, it travels like a domino effect, creating a pathway that leads to the end result of the desired area being affected. For your massage, I usually work on your shoulders and neck for the first 20 minutes of the session to not only give you some immediate relief but to "start warming those tissues up" for a deeper release that would then catapult into affecting your neck and shoulders as we got further into the session. My sense is that you came in to receive a deeper and longer lasting benefit by having me address all of the areas of your body that support your neck feeling freer and your shoulders resting on top of your rib cage more easily.
Massage Therapists are trained to address the muscular system as a whole as well as the fascia layers that are inter-dispersed throughout and surrounding the muscles, bones and organs. It is our goal to support the soft tissue to receive the relaxing effect in the moment, as well as the deeper change in the tissues that are holding long seated tension from the feet to the top of the head. When we walk, each step creates a relationship between our feet and head that gives every thing in-between, the invitation to relax. And when we sit at the computer or drive a car, feeling the support from our sits bones to the base of our neck, helps let go of the sense that we are all to often just using our arms and shoulders to do all of the work. Ida Rolf once said that to get to the neck, we must work in the feet. And for your encouragement to share with you what my thoughts are surrounding, giving the best massage I can, to help you reach your goals.
